What is the Montessori education?

Montessori education is an educational approach developed by Italian first female doctor and educator Maria Montessori and characterized by an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical, and social development.

Montessori schools are characterized by:

  • Mixed age classrooms, with classrooms for children ages 2½ or 3 to 6 years old by far the most common

  • Student choice of activity from within a prescribed range of options

  • Uninterrupted blocks of work time, ideally three hours

  • A constructivist or "discovery" model, where students learn concepts from working with materials, rather than by direct instruction

  • Specialized educational materials developed by Montessori and her collaborators

  • Freedom of movement within the classroom

  • A trained Montessori teacher

Infant and Toddler Programs: Montessori classrooms for children under three fall into several categories, with a number of terms being used. A "Nido", Italian for "nest", serves a small number of children from around two months to around fourteen months, or when the child is confidently walking. A "Young Child Community" serves a larger number of children from around one year to two-and-a-half or three years old. Both environments emphasize materials and activities scaled to the children's size and abilities, opportunities to develop movement, and activities to develop independence. Development of independence in toileting is typically emphasized as well.

Many Montessori schools tend to offer Parents-children classes too and that what we do at Montessori-family. We believe that parents are the main educators.  We help parents to have an understanding of their child development and how the environment (home) can support their child well-being.

Testimonial

All round, a fantastic experience for a child to explore in relative peace at their own pace in their own way! Not being rushed into moving on to something else, and being reassured that sharing is not to be imposed upon them makes it even more peaceful, and it's wonderful to have an instructor with a knowledge of child development reminding parents of these, so expectations are uniform.
Respect for the child is paramount, and it's wonderful being in an environment where this is actively encouraged. A wonderful and different playgroup that is so focused on the child. Highly recommended!
